To take a line from the newest song by Foster The People (the band that did “Pumped Up Kicks” way back when, which was hot for like a week. Remember them?):
These things ask the biggest question to me
And it’s are you what you want to be
So are you what you want to be?
No, seriously, ask yourself: Are you what you want to be? Is your business what you want it to be? If not, it might be time to hire a professional.
Yes, yes, I know you are the professional in your field. If you an accounting firm or advertising firm, I’m not advocating for you to hire an accountant or advertising genius. What you might need, however, is to hire a professional to take your business to the next level. Erin wrote about hiring a business coach as a professional asset to your company. Sometimes (even though its hard to admit it) we need some professional help.
But again, I’m going to let Foster The People take it from here. Are you what you want to be? If not, then figure out why. Go back to your mission statement (if you don’t have one, shame on you) or the reason why you started this business. Does that and your current position match up? If not, why? Are your clients wrong for you and your business? Do you have the right people working for you? Are they in the right positions? Is your company humming along, or speeding towards a brick wall?
It’s hard to give answers to these questions sometimes. It’s hard for me to evaluate myself and work sometimes because I have no outside perspective. Hiring that professional can help you gain serious insight into why your business isn’t working. Plus, it’s always nice to have some more professionals in your corner fighting for you. Because if your business isn’t what you want it, you might start to feel a little lonely.
